Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Industrials and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.35% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.97%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.39%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 5.42% or 19.22 points to trade at 374.12 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 3.05% or 5.08 points to end at 171.86 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 2.69% or 1.24 points to 47.37 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which lost 1.26% or 1.40 points to trade at 109.59 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 1.22% or 1.72 points to end at 139.25 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 0.49% or 0.28 points to 57.35.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Xilinx Inc (NASDAQ:XLNX) which rose 6.94% to 111.78, Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which was up 5.74% to settle at 34.29 and Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) which gained 5.56% to close at 65.09.
The worst performers were SL Green Realty Corp (NYSE:SLG) which was down 3.46% to 85.46 in late trade, Constellation Brands Inc Class A (NYSE:STZ) which lost 2.81% to settle at 181.97 and Western Union Company (NYSE:WU) which was down 2.49% to 19.56 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Moneygram Int (NASDAQ:MGI) which rose 167.59% to 3.88, China Internet Nationwide Financial Services Inc (NASDAQ:CIFS) which was up 50.00% to settle at 1.92 and Sophiris Bio Inc (NASDAQ:SPHS) which gained 34.87% to close at 0.958.
The worst performers were ContraVir Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CTRV) which was down 45.42% to 5.3000 in late trade, Senmiao Technology Ltd (NASDAQ:AIHS) which lost 42.48% to settle at 2.64 and Digital Ally Inc (NASDAQ:DGLY) which was down 42.07% to 1.680 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2147 to 885 and 25 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1837 rose and 814 declined, while 100 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.30% to 15.15.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.54% or 7.25 to $1350.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 4.08% or 2.13 to hit $54.30 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.05% or 0.03 to trade at $62.26 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1196, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 108.47.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.10% at 97.153.
