Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Technology, Industrials and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.25%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.27%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.48%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 2.53% or 2.91 points to trade at 117.77 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 2.42% or 5.37 points to end at 227.32 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 2.36% or 1.08 points to 46.87 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which lost 0.34% or 0.44 points to trade at 128.24 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) declined 0.18% or 0.22 points to end at 121.18 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) shed 0.11% or 0.06 points to 55.05.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) which rose 10.68% to 156.09, PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) which was up 6.25% to settle at 76.00 and National Oilwell Varco Inc (NYSE:NOV) which gained 4.85% to close at 20.10.
The worst performers were H&R Block Inc (NYSE:HRB) which was down 9.34% to 24.37 in late trade, Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which lost 7.99% to settle at 63.49 and Altria Group (NYSE:MO) which was down 3.49% to 44.25 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were LogicBio Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:LOGC) which rose 29.46% to 9.58, The Dixie Group Inc (NASDAQ:DXYN) which was up 27.72% to settle at 1.290 and Creative Realities Inc (NASDAQ:CREX) which gained 24.84% to close at 2.050.
The worst performers were So-Young International Inc (NASDAQ:SY) which was down 33.49% to 11.04 in late trade, Ollies Bargain Outlet Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:OLLI) which lost 27.53% to settle at 56.36 and Trans World Entertainment Corp (NASDAQ:TWMC) which was down 25.05% to 3.980 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2282 to 686 and 80 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1939 rose and 739 declined, while 73 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.60% to 17.88.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.81% or 12.55 to $1536.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.52% or 0.85 to hit $56.63 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.03% or 0.02 to trade at $60.39 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1058, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 106.50.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.28% at 98.392.
