Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Industrials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 11.37%, while the S&P 500 index added 9.38%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 8.12%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 22.74% or 12.33 points to trade at 66.55 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 21.88% or 15.09 points to end at 84.05 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 20.89% or 22.06 points to 127.68 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 0.64% or 0.32 points to trade at 49.99 in late trade. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 0.66% or 0.75 points to end at 115.03 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) gained 3.76% or 1.64 points to 45.25.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which rose 42.19% to 13.75, DXC Technology Co (NYSE:DXC) which was up 41.02% to settle at 14.99 and L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which gained 39.04% to close at 12.75.
The worst performers were Mylan NV (NASDAQ:MYL) which was down 3.81% to 15.14 in late trade, Activision Blizzard Inc (NASDAQ:ATVI) which lost 3.61% to settle at 54.43 and Kroger Company (NYSE:KR) which was down 2.99% to 30.15 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Imac Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:IMAC) which rose 1000.00% to 4.950, Mid-Con Energy Partners LP (NASDAQ:MCEP) which was up 153.35% to settle at 0.2080 and US Gold Corp (NASDAQ:USAU) which gained 122.89% to close at 7.4000.
The worst performers were Milestone Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:MIST) which was down 87.86% to 1.70 in late trade, Baudax Bio Inc (NASDAQ:BXRX) which lost 48.05% to settle at 2.27 and New York Mortgage Trust Inc (NASDAQ:NYMT) which was down 46.03% to 1.02 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2672 to 263 and 18 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2374 rose and 349 declined, while 32 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.13% to 61.67.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 6.48% or 101.55 to $1669.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 3.98% or 0.93 to hit $24.29 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.33% or 0.09 to trade at $27.57 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.0789, while USD/JPY rose 0.25% to 111.48.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.24% at 101.963.
