Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.06% to hit a new 52-week high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.71%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.76%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 3.98% or 13.76 points to trade at 359.49 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 3.29% or 15.92 points to end at 500.00 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 3.08% or 10.07 points to 337.27 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON), which lost 1.40% or 2.92 points to trade at 205.25 in late trade. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) declined 1.32% or 3.22 points to end at 240.77 and Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) shed 0.39% or 0.24 points to 60.57.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Charles Schwab Corp (NYSE:SCHW) which rose 12.57% to 66.01, Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:CZR) which was up 7.39% to settle at 56.35 and Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) which gained 6.45% to close at 91.94.
The worst performers were Extra Space Storage Inc (NYSE:EXR) which was down 3.91% to 150.31 in late trade, Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) which lost 3.82% to settle at 201.34 and SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) which was down 3.41% to 274.16 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were icad inc (NASDAQ:ICAD) which rose 74.27% to 3.59, Evelo Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:EVLO) which was up 61.69% to settle at 5.74 and Biophytis (NASDAQ:BPTS) which gained 40.72% to close at 3.11.
The worst performers were 9 Meters Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:NMTR) which was down 68.65% to 0.19 in late trade, Fangdd Network Group Ltd (NASDAQ:DUO) which lost 47.06% to settle at 0.21 and Utime Ltd (NASDAQ:UTME) which was down 39.89% to 0.58 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2123 to 854 and 90 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2129 rose and 1395 declined, while 154 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.34% to 13.30.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.33% or 26.00 to $1,982.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 2.08% or 1.54 to hit $75.62 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.52% or 1.19 to trade at $79.69 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.03% to 1.12, while USD/JPY rose 0.12% to 138.88.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 99.61.
