Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Financials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.93% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.82%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.37%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which rose 2.58% or 1.32 points to trade at 52.45 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 2.30% or 8.21 points to end at 365.83 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 2.21% or 3.21 points to 148.43 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 0.30% or 0.72 points to trade at 237.16 in late trade. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 0.08% or 0.19 points to end at 234.85 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) shed 0.02% or 0.01 points to 54.46.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE:IRM) which rose 7.59% to 41.67, Kellogg Company (NYSE:K) which was up 7.07% to settle at 67.53 and Lumen Technologies Inc (NYSE:LUMN) which gained 5.17% to close at 13.43.
The worst performers were Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which was down 8.56% to 152.85 in late trade, Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp Class A (NASDAQ:CTSH) which lost 7.78% to settle at 75.12 and Cardinal Health Inc (NYSE:CAH) which was down 6.95% to 56.60 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were SemiLEDS Corporation (NASDAQ:LEDS) which rose 84.91% to 10.170, Liquidity Services Inc (NASDAQ:LQDT) which was up 38.01% to settle at 25.89 and Stealth BioTherapeutics Corp (NASDAQ:MITO) which gained 35.00% to close at 1.62.
The worst performers were Purecycle Technologies Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:PCT) which was down 39.61% to 14.85 in late trade, Yellow Corp (NASDAQ:YELL) which lost 32.11% to settle at 6.490 and Blue Hat Interactive Entertainment (NASDAQ:BHAT) which was down 28.42% to 0.802 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1751 to 1436 and 103 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2015 fell and 1303 advanced, while 117 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.97% to 18.39.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.72% or 30.65 to $1814.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.19% or 0.78 to hit $64.85 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 1.07% or 0.74 to trade at $68.22 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.46% to 1.2061, while USD/JPY fell 0.08% to 109.09.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.43% at 90.903.
