Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Telecoms and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.84%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.89%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.97%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which rose 6.66% or 3.49 points to trade at 55.93 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 2.36% or 8.17 points to end at 353.81 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 2.31% or 2.91 points to 128.93 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 1.33% or 2.31 points to trade at 171.81 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 0.54% or 0.69 points to end at 126.61 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) shed 0.46% or 0.24 points to 52.50.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) which rose 6.66% to 55.93, Mettler-Toledo International Inc (NYSE:MTD) which was up 3.59% to settle at 744.98 and Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) which gained 3.47% to close at 304.71.
The worst performers were Xilinx Inc (NASDAQ:XLNX) which was down 7.27% to 106.13 in late trade, Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) which lost 7.14% to settle at 68.11 and Smith AO Corporation (NYSE:AOS) which was down 6.27% to 45.12 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were OUTLOOK THERAPEUTICS INC (NASDAQ:OTLK) which rose 68.06% to 1.53, Jiayin Group Inc (NASDAQ:JFIN) which was up 56.12% to settle at 21.70 and Iovance Biotherapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:IOVA) which gained 36.06% to close at 15.280.
The worst performers were SITO Mobile Ltd (NASDAQ:SITO) which was down 40.31% to 1.140 in late trade, Soliton Inc (NASDAQ:SOLY) which lost 31.50% to settle at 7.2200 and Xenetic Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:XBIO) which was down 25.42% to 0.880 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2013 to 978 and 95 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1511 rose and 1134 declined, while 81 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.00% to 15.29.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.84% or 10.90 to $1286.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 1.79% or 1.11 to hit $63.13 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.07% or 0.05 to trade at $72.81 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.08% to 1.1181, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 109.86.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.29% at 97.657.
