Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Healthcare and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.68% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.75%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.32%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 2.11% or 5.83 points to trade at 282.67 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 2.08% or 1.20 points to end at 58.81 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was up 1.86% or 1.01 points to 55.20 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM), which lost 0.66% or 0.46 points to trade at 68.91 in late trade. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 0.65% or 1.25 points to end at 191.89 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 0.62% or 0.37 points to 59.38.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which rose 6.44% to 19.17, Tiffany & Co (NYSE:TIF) which was up 6.17% to settle at 133.25 and Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which gained 5.94% to close at 94.00.
The worst performers were Comcast Corp (NASDAQ:CMCSA) which was down 3.24% to 43.35 in late trade, Jacobs Engineering Group Inc (NYSE:JEC) which lost 2.82% to settle at 90.75 and JM Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM) which was down 2.37% to 105.83 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sorrento Therape (NASDAQ:SRNE) which rose 94.38% to 3.11, Janone Inc (NASDAQ:JAN) which was up 54.51% to settle at 3.9400 and Diffusion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:DFFN) which gained 51.61% to close at 0.4700.
The worst performers were Cymabay Therapeu (NASDAQ:CBAY) which was down 75.86% to 1.340 in late trade, La Jolla Pharmaceutical Co (NASDAQ:LJPC) which lost 53.58% to settle at 2.59 and Adamis Pharma (NASDAQ:ADMP) which was down 50.96% to 0.62 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2057 to 783 and 91 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2034 rose and 626 declined, while 68 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.81% to 11.87 a new 52-week low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.58% or 8.55 to $1461.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.24% or 0.14 to hit $57.91 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $62.53 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.01% to 1.1012, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 108.94.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 98.218.
