Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Industrials and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.65%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.68%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.58%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which rose 6.07% or 3.11 points to trade at 54.33 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 3.42% or 1.74 points to end at 52.62 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 2.54% or 5.43 points to 219.43 in late trade.
Biggest losers included The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which lost 1.48% or 2.21 points to trade at 147.50 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) declined 1.26% or 1.45 points to end at 113.85 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) shed 0.65% or 0.73 points to 112.09.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which rose 9.95% to 119.31, Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:SHW) which was up 7.84% to settle at 490.23 and Stanley Black & Decker Inc (NYSE:SWK) which gained 7.18% to close at 151.66.
The worst performers were PulteGroup Inc (NYSE:PHM) which was down 8.33% to 30.69 in late trade, Zions Bancorporation (NASDAQ:ZION) which lost 5.31% to settle at 42.83 and Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE:WHR) which was down 3.96% to 142.47 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Hoth Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:HOTH) which rose 58.82% to 6.75, Therapix Biosciences Ltd (NASDAQ:TRPX) which was up 47.83% to settle at 3.40 and Microbot Medical Inc (NASDAQ:MBOT) which gained 31.63% to close at 6.9500.
The worst performers were Marinus Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:MRNS) which was down 70.10% to 1.19 in late trade, Viveve Medical Inc (NASDAQ:VIVE) which lost 60.82% to settle at 0.1598 and Intracellular Th (NASDAQ:ITCI) which was down 31.64% to 8.19 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1952 to 1006 and 126 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1449 rose and 1191 declined, while 93 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.80% to 12.61.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.61% or 8.75 to $1418.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.65% or 0.93 to hit $57.15 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.12% or 0.08 to trade at $64.27 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.01% to 1.1152, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 108.19.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.49% at 97.417.
