Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.61%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.54%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 4.99% or 4.69 points to trade at 98.74 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 3.17% or 6.07 points to end at 197.80 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 2.66% or 10.76 points to 415.28 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 4.29% or 8.26 points to trade at 184.23 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 0.91% or 0.92 points to end at 100.16 and Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON) shed 0.58% or 1.16 points to 199.13.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) which rose 11.71% to 127.50, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was up 7.16% to settle at 919.13 and West Pharmaceutical Services Inc (NYSE:WST) which gained 5.73% to close at 378.02.
The worst performers were Southwest Airlines Company (NYSE:LUV) which was down 14.89% to 28.75 in late trade, Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which lost 5.98% to settle at 121.00 and American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which was down 4.71% to 13.96 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ClearOne Inc (NASDAQ:CLRO) which rose 127.50% to 2.06, Regulus Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RGLS) which was up 71.01% to settle at 2.36 and Bright Green Corp (NASDAQ:BGXX) which gained 45.72% to close at 0.30.
The worst performers were Simpple Ltd (NASDAQ:SPPL) which was down 78.13% to 1.24 in late trade, BYND Cannasoft Enterprises Inc (NASDAQ:BCAN) which lost 70.50% to settle at 0.03 and Aslan Pharmaceuticals Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:ASLN) which was down 57.98% to 0.69 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1571 to 1311 and 70 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1935 fell and 1457 advanced, while 123 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 9.07% to 13.84.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.19% or 26.05 to $2,162.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 0.06% or 0.05 to hit $77.88 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.02% or 0.02 to trade at $82.19 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.04% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.50% to 147.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 102.53.
