Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Industrials, Basic Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.43%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.49%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.55%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 3.51% or 7.20 points to trade at 212.32 at the close. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) added 3.47% or 1.34 points to end at 39.93 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 2.90% or 4.05 points to 143.80 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 2.23% or 1.54 points to trade at 67.62 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 1.62% or 0.85 points to end at 51.64 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 1.52% or 1.78 points to 114.95.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which rose 12.14% to 324.36, KLA-Tencor Corporation (NASDAQ:KLAC) which was up 10.46% to settle at 117.42 and Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) which gained 9.68% to close at 164.95.
The worst performers were IPG Photonics Corporation (NASDAQ:IPGP) which was down 26.87% to 164.04 in late trade, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which lost 6.83% to settle at 433.66 and Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which was down 6.33% to 57.74 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Naked Brand Group Ltd (NASDAQ:NAKD) which rose 44.58% to 6.000, Medpace Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MEDP) which was up 30.38% to settle at 61.37 and Aytu BioScience Inc (NASDAQ:AYTU) which gained 20.70% to close at 0.3435.
The worst performers were Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which was down 38.00% to 0.496 in late trade, GDS Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:GDS) which lost 37.18% to settle at 21.83 and JMU Ltd (NASDAQ:JMU) which was down 34.14% to 1.910 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2074 to 1002 and 103 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1623 rose and 951 declined, while 129 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 9.54% to 12.90.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.20% or 2.40 to $1223.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.97% or 1.38 to hit $68.75 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 1.69% or 1.28 to trade at $74.27 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.07% to 1.1698, while USD/JPY rose 0.65% to 111.78.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.15% at 94.28.
