Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Industrials and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.41% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.09%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 2.67% or 8.28 points to trade at 318.43 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 1.59% or 2.25 points to end at 144.14 and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) was up 1.53% or 0.28 points to 18.56 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 2.50% or 1.12 points to trade at 43.62 in late trade. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) declined 1.20% or 1.22 points to end at 100.39 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) shed 0.73% or 0.67 points to 91.05.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE:BSX) which rose 8.33% to 27.96, Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which was up 6.93% to settle at 242.80 and Gilead Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:GILD) which gained 4.97% to close at 78.10.
The worst performers were Acuity Brands Inc (NYSE:AYI) which was down 14.96% to 157.95 in late trade, Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which lost 5.66% to settle at 42.97 and Under Armour Inc A (NYSE:UAA) which was down 5.44% to 15.11 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Pain Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PTIE) which rose 103.15% to 9.040, Diffusion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:DFFN) which was up 42.98% to settle at 1.7300 and Inpixon (NASDAQ:INPX) which gained 30.34% to close at 0.2900.
The worst performers were Alliance MMA Inc (NASDAQ:AMMA) which was down 40.56% to 0.85 in late trade, My Size Inc (NASDAQ:MYSZ) which lost 39.86% to settle at 1.72 and Aradigm Cor (NASDAQ:ARDM) which was down 38.23% to 3.700 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1819 to 1268 and 124 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1379 fell and 1146 advanced, while 114 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.57% to 10.05.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.46% or 6.10 to $1314.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 2.02% or 1.25 to hit $62.98 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.55% or 1.05 to trade at $68.83 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.25% to 1.1938, while USD/JPY fell 0.47% to 112.59.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.15% at 92.22.
