Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.32% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.28%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.56%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which rose 1.42% or 0.96 points to trade at 68.62 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 1.41% or 1.17 points to end at 84.17 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 1.38% or 2.26 points to 165.51 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 0.91% or 1.30 points to trade at 141.58 in late trade. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) declined 0.80% or 0.59 points to end at 73.30 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 0.79% or 0.94 points to 118.58.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which rose 9.66% to 5.505, Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which was up 5.35% to settle at 10.43 and Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which gained 4.64% to close at 28.44.
The worst performers were Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which was down 3.93% to 23.23 in late trade, Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) which lost 3.34% to settle at 78.90 and Consolidated Edison Inc (NYSE:ED) which was down 2.42% to 76.23 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were SORL Auto Parts Inc (NASDAQ:SORL) which rose 52.69% to 2.840, Providence and Worcester Railroad (NASDAQ:PWX) which was up 50.92% to settle at 24.60 and American Electric Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AETI) which gained 49.06% to close at 3.950.
The worst performers were Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:AUPH) which was down 55.75% to 1.810 in late trade, Merus Labs International Inc (NASDAQ:MSLI) which lost 22.61% to settle at 0.952 and DryShips Inc (NASDAQ:DRYS) which was down 18.71% to 1.0500 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2066 to 1117 and 86 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1740 rose and 803 declined, while 90 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.25% to 11.81.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.11% or 1.45 to $1344.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 2.81% or 1.25 to hit $45.74 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 2.92% or 1.37 to trade at $48.34 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.20% to 1.1183, while USD/JPY fell 0.02% to 101.25.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.09% at 95.59.
