Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.28% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.34%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.34%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE), which rose 3.06% or 1.05 points to trade at 35.37 at the close. DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP) added 2.50% or 1.67 points to end at 68.52 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 2.21% or 4.89 points to 225.95 in late trade.
Biggest losers included McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which lost 3.22% or 5.20 points to trade at 156.33 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 1.06% or 2.11 points to end at 197.47 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) shed 0.51% or 0.48 points to 93.51.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which rose 6.47% to 5.76, Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which was up 6.44% to settle at 27.61 and Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) which gained 5.60% to close at 17.92.
The worst performers were Anthem Inc (NYSE:ANTM) which was down 3.42% to 189.24 in late trade, McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) which lost 3.22% to settle at 156.33 and Extra Space Storage Inc (NYSE:EXR) which was down 2.83% to 77.47 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Forward Pharma A S (NASDAQ:FWP) which rose 36.60% to 6.99, Aethlon Medical Inc (NASDAQ:AEMD) which was up 35.13% to settle at 2.700 and Aldeyra The (NASDAQ:ALDX) which gained 34.52% to close at 5.65.
The worst performers were Opiant Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:OPNT) which was down 27.27% to 36.0000 in late trade, FalconStor Software Inc (NASDAQ:FALC) which lost 26.92% to settle at 0.570 and Advaxis Inc (NASDAQ:ADXS) which was down 19.88% to 5.48 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1901 to 1169 and 163 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1561 rose and 933 declined, while 147 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.12% to 10.61.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.01% or 0.13 to $1335.83 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 0.40% or 0.19 to hit $48.26 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.82% or 0.44 to trade at $54.28 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.08% to 1.1963, while USD/JPY rose 0.67% to 110.13.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.01% at 91.91.
