Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Industrials, Technology and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.26%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.30%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), which rose 2.92% or 3.37 points to trade at 118.70 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 1.40% or 3.31 points to end at 240.49 and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) was up 0.95% or 0.74 points to 78.77 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 1.86% or 1.00 points to trade at 52.73 in late trade. E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD) declined 0.77% or 0.64 points to end at 82.24 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 0.55% or 0.50 points to 91.10.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were United Rentals Inc (NYSE:URI) which rose 3.82% to 114.94, United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) which was up 2.92% to settle at 118.70 and Ryder System Inc (NYSE:R) which gained 2.84% to close at 77.39.
The worst performers were Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which was down 11.93% to 55.02 in late trade, Under Armour Inc A (NYSE:UAA) which lost 2.95% to settle at 16.43 and Under Armour Inc C (NYSE:UA) which was down 2.79% to 15.340 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Uni-Pixel Inc (NASDAQ:UNXL) which rose 105.57% to 0.1291, LiNiu Technology Group (NASDAQ:LINU) which was up 37.72% to settle at 1.670 and Achieve Life Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:ACHV) which gained 37.69% to close at 3.6900.
The worst performers were Acorda Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ACOR) which was down 24.32% to 19.45 in late trade, The Finish Line Inc (NASDAQ:FINL) which lost 18.43% to settle at 8.50 and Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which was down 18.30% to 0.7190 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1537 to 1528 and 167 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1307 rose and 1175 declined, while 140 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.62% to 11.73.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.09% or 1.24 to $1314.06 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.41% or 0.19 to hit $46.38 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.43% or 0.22 to trade at $51.64 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.05% to 1.1972, while USD/JPY rose 0.44% to 109.73.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.12% at 92.28.
