Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Industrials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.17%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.06%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 1.85% or 0.67 points to trade at 36.98 at the close. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) added 1.40% or 1.28 points to end at 92.54 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) was up 0.88% or 1.72 points to 196.53 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which lost 1.00% or 0.87 points to trade at 86.22 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 0.68% or 0.82 points to end at 120.36 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 0.64% or 0.56 points to 86.50.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Coach Inc (NYSE:COH) which rose 11.38% to 43.15, Martin Marietta Materials Inc (NYSE:MLM) which was up 7.62% to settle at 239.85 and Cummins Inc (NYSE:CMI) which gained 6.10% to close at 160.56.
The worst performers were Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) which was down 8.88% to 41.67 in late trade, Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which lost 7.16% to settle at 24.95 and NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which was down 5.40% to 15.77 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Angies List Inc (NASDAQ:ANGI) which rose 61.46% to 9.51, Span-America Medical Systems Inc (NASDAQ:SPAN) which was up 32.96% to settle at 28.90 and The Bon-Ton Stores Inc (NASDAQ:BONT) which gained 25.76% to close at 0.830.
The worst performers were First NBC Bank Holding Company (NASDAQ:FNBC) which was down 58.58% to 0.09 in late trade, AEterna Zentaris Inc (NASDAQ:AEZS) which lost 33.33% to settle at 0.900 and Medpace Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MEDP) which was down 30.83% to 22.41 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1609 to 1580 and 54 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1430 fell and 1068 advanced, while 117 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.25% to 10.54.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.21% or 2.60 to $1258.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 2.54% or 1.24 to hit $47.60 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 2.21% or 1.14 to trade at $50.38 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.24% to 1.0924, while USD/JPY rose 0.17% to 112.03.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.14% at 98.84.
