Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.04%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.26%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.56%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 1.93% or 0.96 points to trade at 50.71 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 1.74% or 2.63 points to end at 153.75 and DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP) was up 1.62% or 1.13 points to 70.79 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which lost 1.21% or 1.57 points to trade at 128.22 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 1.09% or 3.83 points to end at 348.92 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) shed 1.02% or 0.92 points to 89.06.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which rose 4.91% to 207.94, Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which was up 4.28% to settle at 93.80 and Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which gained 4.10% to close at 59.99.
The worst performers were Newfield Exploration Company (NYSE:NFX) which was down 4.84% to 23.20 in late trade, Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) which lost 4.46% to settle at 71.79 and Cimarex Energy Co (NYSE:XEC) which was down 3.39% to 93.41 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Aemetis Inc (NASDAQ:AMTX) which rose 65.09% to 1.0500, Acm Research Inc (NASDAQ:ACMR) which was up 40.04% to settle at 11.00 and Baozun Inc (NASDAQ:BZUN) which gained 31.11% to close at 48.21.
The worst performers were Lianluo Smart Ltd (NASDAQ:LLIT) which was down 20.34% to 2.310 in late trade, GlycoMimetics Inc (NASDAQ:GLYC) which lost 17.84% to settle at 18.75 and Infinity Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:INFI) which was down 17.28% to 2.25 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2052 to 1014 and 132 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1599 rose and 911 declined, while 153 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.03% to 18.35.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 1.14% or 15.10 to $1335.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 0.19% or 0.12 to hit $62.45 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.18% or 0.12 to trade at $65.66 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.58% to 1.2407, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 106.20.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.43% at 89.57.
