Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.02% to hit a new 3-month high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.11%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 1.24% or 3.10 points to trade at 253.78 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 0.89% or 1.12 points to end at 127.56 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.66% or 1.31 points to 199.64 in late trade.
Biggest losers included McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which lost 1.43% or 2.42 points to trade at 166.49 in late trade. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 1.13% or 1.40 points to end at 122.66 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) shed 1.01% or 0.37 points to 36.30.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE) which rose 15.54% to 117.19, Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE:BSX) which was up 7.42% to settle at 34.32 and Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) which gained 5.59% to close at 44.60.
The worst performers were Stryker Corporation (NYSE:SYK) which was down 5.12% to 169.78 in late trade, Cooper Companies Inc (NYSE:COO) which lost 4.41% to settle at 221.97 and Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE:PCG) which was down 4.08% to 39.76 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nano Dimension Ltd (NASDAQ:NNDM) which rose 100.00% to 2.68, Apricus Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:APRI) which was up 58.30% to settle at 0.427 and Correvio Pharma Corp (NASDAQ:CORV) which gained 44.23% to close at 3.000.
The worst performers were Vical Inc (NASDAQ:VICL) which was down 26.05% to 1.2054 in late trade, Altimmune Inc (NASDAQ:ALT) which lost 14.92% to settle at 0.560 and Innovate Biopharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:INNT) which was down 13.16% to 10.29 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1693 to 1349 and 142 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1352 rose and 1208 declined, while 116 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.38% to 12.47.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.13% or 1.70 to $1304.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.49% or 0.32 to hit $66.06 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.12% or 0.09 to trade at $76.37 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.14% to 1.1786, while USD/JPY rose 0.46% to 110.05.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.02% at 93.57.
