Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Financials, Industrials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.52% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.37%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.56%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 9.62% or 6.07 points to trade at 69.20 at the close. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) added 3.18% or 0.85 points to end at 27.57 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 1.64% or 0.92 points to 57.04 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 3.28% or 5.24 points to trade at 154.70 in late trade. Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) declined 2.22% or 2.91 points to end at 128.08 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.64% or 1.16 points to 69.43.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ:URBN) which rose 13.95% to 28.02, Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) which was up 9.62% to settle at 69.20 and Darden Restaurants Inc (NYSE:DRI) which gained 4.54% to close at 65.90.
The worst performers were Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which was down 5.14% to 14.77 in late trade, Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which lost 5.12% to settle at 9.08 and L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which was down 4.95% to 60.62 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cesca Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:KOOL) which rose 79.60% to 3.6100, Paragon Shipping Inc (NASDAQ:PRGN) which was up 69.64% to settle at 1.9000 and Linn Energy LLC (NASDAQ:LINE) which gained 48.51% to close at 0.15.
The worst performers were Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which was down 27.95% to 2.6300 in late trade, China Finance Online Co Limited (NASDAQ:JRJC) which lost 23.17% to settle at 3.880 and Warren Resources Inc (NASDAQ:WRES) which was down 17.51% to 0.0820 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2323 to 988 and 35 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1754 fell and 805 advanced, while 59 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.63% to 16.37 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 1.50% or 19.15 to $1255.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.17% or 0.08 to hit $48.11 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.47% or 0.23 to trade at $48.70 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.13% to 1.1201, while USD/JPY fell 0.19% to 109.99.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.12% at 95.31.
