Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.21%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.34%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.32%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 1.11% or 0.78 points to trade at 70.72 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 1.08% or 0.61 points to end at 57.28 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 0.71% or 0.79 points to 112.31 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which lost 1.82% or 1.99 points to trade at 107.36 in late trade. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) declined 1.07% or 0.32 points to end at 29.54 and E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD) shed 1.00% or 0.81 points to 80.42.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Western Union Company (NYSE:WU) which rose 3.52% to 20.27, Motorola Solutions Inc (NYSE:MSI) which was up 2.09% to settle at 83.36 and Regency Centers Corporation (NYSE:REG) which gained 1.77% to close at 64.85.
The worst performers were Frontier Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:FTR) which was down 4.74% to 2.41 in late trade, United Continental Holdings Inc (NYSE:UAL) which lost 4.72% to settle at 66.55 and Citrix Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CTXS) which was down 3.43% to 82.02 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were DragonWave Inc (NASDAQ:DRWI) which rose 65.22% to 1.9000, Neovasc Inc (NASDAQ:NVCN) which was up 28.06% to settle at 1.780 and Moneygram Int (NASDAQ:MGI) which gained 24.57% to close at 15.77.
The worst performers were Anthera Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ANTH) which was down 39.64% to 0.414 in late trade, Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:AUPH) which lost 25.05% to settle at 7.900 and Aratana Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PETX) which was down 23.45% to 5.32 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2168 to 1045 and 42 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1646 fell and 840 advanced, while 116 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.02% to 12.26.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.45% or 5.45 to $1197.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 1.01% or 0.49 to hit $47.91 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.47% or 0.24 to trade at $51.11 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.49% to 1.0602, while USD/JPY fell 0.10% to 114.77.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.40% at 101.66.
