Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.15%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.18%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.21%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 1.56% or 1.96 points to trade at 127.46 at the close. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 1.09% or 0.75 points to end at 69.47 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 0.77% or 0.80 points to 104.57 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 1.95% or 1.53 points to trade at 76.79 in late trade. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) declined 1.23% or 0.97 points to end at 78.14 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 1.00% or 1.66 points to 165.09.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Time Warner Cable Inc (NYSE:TWC) which rose 4.06% to 209.63, Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which was up 3.83% to settle at 26.29 and Kroger Company (NYSE:KR) which gained 3.34% to close at 36.77.
The worst performers were Perrigo Co (NYSE:PRGO) which was down 18.09% to 99.40 in late trade, Xerox Corporation (NYSE:XRX) which lost 13.34% to settle at 9.68 and Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which was down 11.60% to 30.04 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Tetralogic Phrm (NASDAQ:TLOG) which rose 66.10% to 0.4900, Macrocure Ltd (NASDAQ:MCUR) which was up 52.29% to settle at 1.66 and Nephrogenex (NASDAQ:NRX) which gained 46.10% to close at 0.5800.
The worst performers were Eleven Biothera (NASDAQ:EBIO) which was down 30.72% to 1.0392 in late trade, TrovaGene Inc (NASDAQ:TROV) which lost 23.83% to settle at 4.730 and Parnell Pharmaceuticals Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:PARN) which was down 14.92% to 2.11 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2169 to 1140 and 33 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1570 fell and 994 advanced, while 70 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.73% to 14.11.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 0.71% or 8.75 to $1238.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.74% or 0.76 to hit $42.97 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 1.09% or 0.49 to trade at $44.58 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.34% to 1.1261, while USD/JPY fell 0.47% to 111.20.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.34% at 94.79.
