Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Healthcare and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.02%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which rose 0.87% or 0.90 points to trade at 104.72 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 0.69% or 0.97 points to end at 141.32 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 0.69% or 1.05 points to 153.66 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 3.56% or 1.85 points to trade at 50.17 in late trade. Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) declined 1.71% or 1.45 points to end at 83.33 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) shed 1.25% or 1.17 points to 92.68.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (NYSE:DVA) which rose 6.25% to 58.61, Loews Corporation (NYSE:L) which was up 4.89% to settle at 43.02 and Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which gained 4.66% to close at 37.03.
The worst performers were Zimmer Biomet Holdings Inc (NYSE:ZBH) which was down 14.00% to 105.39 in late trade, CenturyLink Inc (NYSE:CTL) which lost 12.54% to settle at 26.58 and Baker Hughes Incorporated (NYSE:BHI) which was down 6.26% to 55.42 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Neovasc Inc (NASDAQ:NVCN) which rose 31.21% to 1.030, Intersections Inc (NASDAQ:INTX) which was up 25.00% to settle at 2.200 and Atossa Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:ATOS) which gained 22.67% to close at 1.8400.
The worst performers were Memorial Production Partners LP (NASDAQ:MEMP) which was down 48.17% to 0.565 in late trade, Skyline Medical Inc (NASDAQ:SKLN) which lost 32.62% to settle at 1.5700 and Real Goods Solar Inc (NASDAQ:RGSE) which was down 21.47% to 1.2800 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1633 to 1502 and 100 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1293 fell and 1175 advanced, while 148 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.37% to 17.06 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.15% or 1.95 to $1278.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 4.05% or 1.97 to hit $46.73 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 4.26% or 2.16 to trade at $48.52 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.06% to 1.0979, while USD/JPY rose 0.08% to 104.81.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.03% at 98.34.
