India shares lower at close of trade; Nifty 50 down 1.54%

Investing.com – India equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Power, Auto and Real Estate sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 fell 1.54% to hit a new 1-month low, while the BSE Sensex 30 index lost 1.51%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Tata Steel Ltd (NS:TISC), which rose 2.87% or 20.15 points to trade at 722.95 at the close. Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd (NS:REDY) added 0.78% or 34.00 points to end at 4384.50 and ICICI Bank Ltd (NS:ICBK) was up 0.55% or 3.10 points to 570.60 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (NS:IOC), which lost 4.02% or 3.80 points to trade at 90.75 in late trade. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (NS:MRTI) declined 3.88% or 274.20 points to end at 6792.00 and Coal India Ltd (NS:COAL) shed 3.40% or 4.50 points to 127.80.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd (BO:REDY) which rose 0.74% to 4383.30, ICICI Bank Ltd (BO:ICBK) which was up 0.70% to settle at 571.40 and Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd (BO:HDFC) which gained 0.25% to close at 2472.45.

The worst performers were Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (BO:MRTI) which was down 3.98% to 6786.15 in late trade, Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (BO:HLL) which lost 3.47% to settle at 2237.70 and Bharti Airtel Ltd (BO:BRTI) which was down 2.98% to 508.00 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1376 to 294 and 53 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 2117 fell and 729 advanced, while 165 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 1.08% to 22.6975.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.19% or 3.25 to $1729.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 1.42% or 0.87 to hit $60.31 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 1.10% or 0.71 to trade at $63.70 a barrel.

USD/INR was up 0.00% to 72.593, while EUR/INR rose 0.04% to 85.7810.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 92.588.
