Investing.com – India equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Banking, Oil & Gas and IT sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 fell 0.80%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index declined 0.89%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Hindalco Industries Ltd. (NS:HALC), which rose 3.52% or 24.00 points to trade at 705.30 at the close. Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (NS:PGRD) added 1.57% or 4.90 points to end at 317.70 and Divi's Laboratories Ltd. (NS:DIVI) was up 1.27% or 55.90 points to 4,448.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd (NS:HDFL), which lost 2.87% or 16.60 points to trade at 561.85 in late trade. SBI Life Insurance Company Ltd (NS:SBIL) declined 2.62% or 37.95 points to end at 1,412.80 and Tech Mahindra Ltd (NS:TEML) shed 2.27% or 29.80 points to 1,285.30.
The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (BO:PGRD) which rose 1.33% to 316.95, Nestle India Ltd (BO:NEST) which was up 0.71% to settle at 2,468.95 and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (BO:SUN) which gained 0.58% to close at 1,473.40.
The worst performers were Tech Mahindra Ltd (BO:TEML) which was down 2.26% to 1,287.00 in late trade, Bajaj Finserv Ltd (BO:BJFS) which lost 2.00% to settle at 1,568.00 and ICICI Bank Ltd (BO:ICBK) which was down 1.99% to 1,104.50 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1243 to 932 and 64 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 2017 fell and 1656 advanced, while 103 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.
The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was down 0.08% to 24.17 a new 52-week high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.48% or 11.30 to $2,345.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.81% or 0.65 to hit $80.48 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.75% or 0.63 to trade at $84.57 a barrel.
USD/INR was up 0.20% to 83.38, while EUR/INR rose 0.10% to 90.41.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.13% at 104.67.
