Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Materials, Energy and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.74% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were New Gold Inc (TSX:NGD), which rose 13.28% or 0.34 points to trade at 2.90 at the close. Ero Copper Corp (TSX:ERO) added 7.61% or 2.30 points to end at 32.51 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) was up 7.53% or 1.36 points to 19.43 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Tilray Inc (TSX:TLRY), which lost 7.24% or 0.21 points to trade at 2.69 in late trade. Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) declined 4.36% or 0.42 points to end at 9.22 and Quebecor Inc Class B (TSX:QBRb) shed 2.87% or 0.90 points to 30.45.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 514 to 414 and 100 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 9.82% to 10.19 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.45% or 34.70 to $2,420.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.95% or 0.75 to hit $79.98 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.79% or 0.66 to trade at $83.93 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.01% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.02% at 104.37.
