Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Materials, Consumer Staples and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.46% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd (TSX:KL), which rose 5.75% or 2.870 points to trade at 52.820 at the close. Endeavour Silver Corp. (TSX:EDR) added 5.16% or 0.330 points to end at 6.720 and Sleep Country Canada Holdings Inc (TSX:ZZZ) was up 5.13% or 1.43 points to 29.30 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Real Matters Inc (TSX:REAL), which lost 5.50% or 0.74 points to trade at 12.71 in late trade. BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB) declined 4.68% or 0.63 points to end at 12.83 and Tilray Inc (TSX:TLRY) shed 3.39% or 0.68 points to 19.37.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 660 to 355 and 104 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.67% or 30.00 to $1829.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.70% or 1.23 to hit $73.62 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 1.68% or 1.24 to trade at $75.11 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.70% to 0.8035, while CAD/EUR rose 0.30% to 0.6758.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.48% at 91.870.
