Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Consumer Staples, Utilities and REITs sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were North West Company Inc (TSX:NWC), which rose 14.66% or 4.43 points to trade at 34.65 at the close. Dollarama Inc (TSX:DOL) added 5.93% or 5.30 points to end at 94.66 and Energy Fuels Inc. (TSX:EFR) was up 5.14% or 0.52 points to 10.63 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX:BIR), which lost 4.92% or 0.42 points to trade at 8.12 in late trade. Dundee Precious Metals Inc (TSX:DPM) declined 4.45% or 0.38 points to end at 8.16 and Parex Resources Inc (TSX:PXT) shed 4.42% or 1.15 points to 24.87.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 560 to 412 and 119 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.85% to 11.73.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.20% or 3.95 to $1,931.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.08% or 0.07 to hit $88.77 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.05% or 0.05 to trade at $92.11 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.23% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.05% at 104.39.
