Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Healthcare and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.19% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.43%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.06%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 5.31% or 2.82 points to trade at 55.91 at the close. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) added 2.37% or 0.71 points to end at 30.63 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 1.54% or 0.54 points to 35.69 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 1.26% or 1.25 points to trade at 98.22 in late trade. Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) declined 0.57% or 0.54 points to end at 93.93 and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) shed 0.46% or 0.15 points to 32.78.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ:CTAS) which rose 9.68% to 106.85, Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which was up 7.50% to settle at 66.82 and Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which gained 5.33% to close at 4.740.
The worst performers were Kellogg Company (NYSE:K) which was down 5.43% to 82.26 in late trade, Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which lost 5.07% to settle at 39.29 and M&T Bank Corporation (NYSE:MTB) which was down 4.18% to 113.81 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were OpGen Inc (NASDAQ:OPGN) which rose 135.67% to 3.700, Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which was up 86.05% to settle at 0.8000 and Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:OPTT) which gained 75.98% to close at 13.920.
The worst performers were Zafgen Inc (NASDAQ:ZFGN) which was down 52.00% to 3.24 in late trade, Real Goods Solar Inc (NASDAQ:RGSE) which lost 19.73% to settle at 6.5900 and China Cmrcl (NASDAQ:CCCR) which was down 18.79% to 1.3400 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2163 to 1112 and 27 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1752 rose and 829 declined, while 64 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.59% to 11.78 a new 52-week low.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 1.33% or 17.70 to $1314.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.46% or 0.21 to hit $45.66 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.99% or 0.46 to trade at $47.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.08% to 1.1012, while USD/JPY rose 0.66% to 106.83.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.10% at 97.16.
