Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Utilities and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.40% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.38%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.53%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 2.51% or 2.64 points to trade at 108.00 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) added 1.14% or 1.29 points to end at 114.11 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 1.09% or 0.91 points to 84.66 in late trade.
Biggest losers included EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which lost 0.37% or 0.26 points to trade at 69.25 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 0.12% or 0.11 points to end at 94.32 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) shed 0.03% or 0.01 points to 30.07.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which rose 7.17% to 12.10, Priceline.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:PCLN) which was up 6.61% to settle at 1578.13 and Johnson Controls International PLC (NYSE:JCI) which gained 5.70% to close at 43.94.
The worst performers were CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which was down 11.85% to 73.51 in late trade, Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which lost 7.46% to settle at 14.51 and Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was down 6.84% to 9.40 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Adesto Technologies Corp (NASDAQ:IOTS) which rose 28.12% to 2.05, China Natural Resources Inc (NASDAQ:CHNR) which was up 26.92% to settle at 1.9800 and Osiris Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OSIR) which gained 23.63% to close at 5.18.
The worst performers were BioScrip Inc (NASDAQ:BIOS) which was down 47.89% to 1.360 in late trade, American Public Education Inc (NASDAQ:APEI) which lost 26.12% to settle at 14.85 and LB Foster Company (NASDAQ:FSTR) which was down 23.23% to 9.75 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1775 to 1330 and 110 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1318 rose and 1128 declined, while 178 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.55% to 18.42.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.27% or 3.45 to $1275.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.36% or 0.16 to hit $44.73 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.80% or 0.37 to trade at $45.78 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.19% to 1.1019, while USD/JPY rose 0.63% to 105.13.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.15% at 97.93.
