Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Friday, as gains in the Utilities, Materials and Mining sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.60%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD), which rose 11.39% or 0.46 points to trade at 4.50 at the close. Meanwhile, Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF) added 10.47% or 0.27 points to end at 2.85 and CCL Industries Inc (TO:CCLb) was up 9.58% or 16.00 points to 182.97 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Gildan Activewear Inc. (TO:GIL), which fell 7.62% or 3.48 points to trade at 42.18 at the close. Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) declined 7.39% or 0.13 points to end at 1.63 and MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd (TO:MDA) was down 6.62% or 5.50 points to 77.54.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 739 to 648 and 176 ended unchanged.
Shares in Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) fell to 5-year lows; losing 7.39% or 0.13 to 1.63. Shares in CCL Industries Inc (TO:CCLb) rose to all time highs; rising 9.58% or 16.00 to 182.97. Shares in MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd (TO:MDA) fell to 52-week lows; falling 6.62% or 5.50 to 77.54.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.41% to 13.73.
Gold for December delivery was up 0.57% or 6.20 to $1094.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 3.54% or 1.72 to hit $46.80 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 2.96% or 1.58 to trade at $51.73 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.55% to 0.7648, while CAD/EUR fell 1.05% to 0.6962.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.31% at 97.31.
