Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Mining, Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.89%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Mitel Networks Corporation (TO:MNW), which rose 19.67% or 1.54 points to trade at 9.37 at the close. First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR) added 7.83% or 1.51 points to end at 20.80 and B2Gold Corp (TO:BTO) was up 6.58% or 0.240 points to 3.890 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cogeco Communications Inc (TO:CCA), which lost 2.70% or 1.72 points to trade at 61.87 in late trade. Intertain Group (TO:IT) declined 1.70% or 0.17 points to end at 9.82 and TransAlta Corp (TO:TA) shed 1.49% or 0.10 points to 6.59.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 830 to 319 and 136 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.22% to 14.06.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.33% or 4.50 to $1366.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.22% or 0.10 to hit $45.24 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.54% or 0.25 to trade at $46.65 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.30% to 0.7669, while CAD/EUR fell 0.19% to 0.6941.
The US Dollar Index was unchanged 0.00% at 96.33.
