Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Industrials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.09%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.97%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.08%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 3.79% or 12.42 points to trade at 340.53 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 2.93% or 1.66 points to end at 58.38 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 2.32% or 2.95 points to 129.96 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 0.44% or 0.49 points to trade at 111.77 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 0.39% or 0.46 points to end at 117.84 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 0.37% or 0.65 points to 175.37.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) which rose 8.73% to 150.75, Monster Beverage Corp (NASDAQ:MNST) which was up 6.23% to settle at 52.83 and KKR & Co LP (F:KR51) which gained 5.59% to close at 18.33.
The worst performers were Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE:PCG) which was down 7.34% to 17.56 in late trade, Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which lost 4.59% to settle at 293.75 and Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which was down 4.21% to 25.22 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were CLPS Inc (NASDAQ:CLPS) which rose 100.32% to 6.35, Microbot Medical Inc (NASDAQ:MBOT) which was up 46.83% to settle at 2.7750 and Phunware Inc (NASDAQ:PHUN) which gained 36.41% to close at 85.00.
The worst performers were ContraFect Corp (NASDAQ:CFRX) which was down 21.85% to 0.683 in late trade, Electrocore LLC (NASDAQ:ECOR) which lost 19.09% to settle at 5.89 and GWG Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:GWGH) which was down 18.53% to 7.52 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2374 to 708 and 70 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1777 rose and 874 declined, while 70 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.35% to 20.47 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.28% or 3.65 to $1286.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 2.49% or 1.21 to hit $49.73 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 2.30% or 1.32 to trade at $58.65 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.28% to 1.1442, while USD/JPY rose 0.09% to 108.80.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.29% at 95.500.
