Investing.com – U.K. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Food & Drug Retailers, Automobiles & Parts and Forestry & Paper sectors led shares higher.
At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 gained 1.05%.
The best performers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were WM Morrison Supermarkets PLC (L:MRW), which rose 8.67% or 13.20 points to trade at 165.50 at the close. Meanwhile, Tesco PLC (L:TSCO) added 6.70% or 9.7500 points to end at 155.2000 and Shire PLC (L:SHP) was up 4.82% or 189.00 points to 4114.00 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Randgold Resources Ltd (L:RRS), which fell 3.75% or 163.00 points to trade at 4188.00 at the close. Antofagasta PLC (L:ANTO) declined 3.51% or 13.60 points to end at 374.10 and BHP Billiton PLC (L:BLT) was down 2.86% or 18.20 points to 617.90.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the London Stock Exchange by 1220 to 975 and 392 ended unchanged.
Shares in Antofagasta PLC (L:ANTO) fell to 5-year lows; down 3.51% or 13.60 to 374.10. Shares in BHP Billiton PLC (L:BLT) fell to 5-year lows; falling 2.86% or 18.20 to 617.90.
Gold for February delivery was down 0.95% or 10.40 to $1085.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 3.57% or 1.12 to hit $30.29 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 3.32% or 1.06 to trade at $30.82 a barrel.
GBP/USD was down 0.89% to 1.4415, while EUR/GBP rose 0.57% to 0.7508.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.35% at 99.27.
