Investing.com – Japan equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Transport, Banking and Paper & Pulp sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 gained 1.56%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TYO:9501), which rose 14.63% or 113.80 points to trade at 891.60 at the close. Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (TYO:7003) added 9.19% or 50.00 points to end at 594.00 and Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. (TYO:9502) was up 5.55% or 108.50 points to 2,065.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. (TYO:5706), which lost 1.59% or 70.00 points to trade at 4,330.00 in late trade. Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (TYO:4005) declined 1.29% or 4.70 points to end at 360.90 and SKY Perfect JSAT Holdings Inc. (TYO:9412) shed 1.05% or 7.00 points to 657.00.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2753 to 896 and 223 ended unchanged on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was up 7.29% to 19.72.
In commodities trading, Crude oil for January delivery was up 0.76% or 0.54 to $71.77 a barrel. Meanwhile, Brent oil for delivery in February rose 0.83% or 0.63 to hit $76.47 a barrel, while the February Gold Futures contract fell 0.01% or 0.15 to trade at $2,014.35 a troy ounce.
USD/JPY was up 0.49% to 145.63, while EUR/JPY rose 0.55% to 156.84.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 103.64.
