Investing.com – India equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Metals, Public Sector Undertakings and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 added 1.01%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index added 0.98%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Hindalco Industries Ltd. (NS:HALC), which rose 4.68% or 25.35 points to trade at 566.75 at the close. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd (NS:REDY) added 3.96% or 224.60 points to end at 5,899.00 and Tata Steel Ltd (NS:TISC) was up 3.88% or 5.05 points to 135.15 in late trade.
Biggest losers included ICICI Bank Ltd (NS:ICBK), which lost 2.97% or 30.55 points to trade at 998.50 in late trade. Axis Bank Ltd (NS:AXBK) declined 2.80% or 30.50 points to end at 1,058.75 and Asian Paints Ltd. (NS:ASPN) shed 1.74% or 53.10 points to 3,001.60.
The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd (BO:REDY) which rose 4.14% to 5,903.35, Tata Steel Ltd (BO:TISC) which was up 3.88% to settle at 135.15 and HCL Technologies Ltd (BO:HCLT) which gained 3.44% to close at 1,575.20.
The worst performers were ICICI Bank Ltd (BO:ICBK) which was down 2.94% to 999.20 in late trade, Axis Bank Ltd. (BO:AXBK) which lost 2.62% to settle at 1,060.35 and Asian Paints Ltd. (BO:ASPN) which was down 1.91% to 2,999.55 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1473 to 650 and 45 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 2345 rose and 1319 declined, while 81 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.
The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was down 3.21% to 14.38.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.26% or 5.25 to $2,031.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.69% or 0.51 to hit $74.88 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.55% or 0.44 to trade at $79.99 a barrel.
USD/INR was down 0.01% to 83.14, while EUR/INR rose 0.37% to 90.60.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.47% at 102.92.
