Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy, Healthcare and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 4.60% to hit a new 52-week low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Real Matters Inc (TSX:REAL), which rose 1.26% or 0.19 points to trade at 15.25 at the close. Maple Leaf Foods Inc . (TSX:MFI) added 0.09% or 0.02 points to end at 21.43 and Parkland Fuel Corporation (TSX:PKI) was up 0.09% or 0.03 points to 33.56 in late trade.
Biggest losers included ShawCor Ltd . (TSX:SCL), which lost 19.85% or 0.79 points to trade at 3.19 in late trade. Whitecap Resources Inc . (TSX:WCP) declined 17.06% or 0.36 points to end at 1.75 and Secure Energy Services Inc . (TSX:SES) shed 16.84% or 0.32 points to 1.58.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1087 to 72 and 41 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0.00% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.53% or 25.45 to $1634.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 3.58% or 1.23 to hit $33.13 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.89% or 0.32 to trade at $35.73 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.03% to 0.7255, while CAD/EUR rose 0.10% to 0.6445.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.17% at 96.550.
