Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and REITs sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 1.17%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BELLUS Health Inc. (TSX:BLU), which rose 6.24% or 0.64 points to trade at 10.90 at the close. Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX:BEP_u) added 3.10% or 1.15 points to end at 38.30 and Gfl Environmental Inc (TSX:GFL) was up 2.74% or 1.20 points to 44.99 in late trade.
Biggest losers included BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which lost 11.74% or 0.64 points to trade at 4.81 in late trade. Equinox Gold Corp (TSX:EQX) declined 5.65% or 0.29 points to end at 4.84 and IAMGold Corporation (TSX:IMG) shed 5.45% or 0.17 points to 2.95.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 747 to 262 and 95 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 5.99% to 12.39.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.91% or 35.50 to $1,819.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 3.82% or 3.07 to hit $77.39 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 3.53% or 3.04 to trade at $83.14 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.99% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.23% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 1.22% at 105.60.
