Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy, Consumer Staples and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.35%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Lithium Americas Corp (TSX:LAC), which rose 14.66% or 6.13 points to trade at 47.94 at the close. Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TSX:TRQ) added 6.87% or 1.13 points to end at 17.59 and Real Matters Inc (TSX:REAL) was up 5.26% or 0.41 points to 8.20 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX:LSPD), which lost 7.65% or 6.08 points to trade at 73.36 in late trade. New Gold Inc (TSX:NGD) declined 6.51% or 0.140 points to end at 2.010 and Centerra Gold Inc (TSX:CG) shed 5.90% or 0.62 points to 9.88.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 654 to 325 and 130 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.53% to 12.64.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.65% or 12.05 to $1849.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 3.07% or 2.41 to hit $76.00 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 2.83% or 2.30 to trade at $78.94 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.32% to 0.7908, while CAD/EUR rose 0.40% to 0.7004.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.49% at 96.007.
