Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Healthcare, Materials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MEG Energy Corp (TSX:MEG), which rose 4.22% or 0.31 points to trade at 7.65 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TSX:BTE) added 3.72% or 0.07 points to end at 1.95 and ARC Resources Ltd . (TSX:ARX) was up 2.86% or 0.23 points to 8.26 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM), which lost 6.40% or 0.85 points to trade at 12.43 in late trade. HudBay Minerals Inc (TSX:HBM) declined 5.78% or 0.31 points to end at 5.05 and Ero Copper Corp (TSX:ERO) shed 4.38% or 1.03 points to 22.50.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 536 to 474 and 110 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0.00% to 12.68.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.61% or 24.55 to $1552.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 3.01% or 1.84 to hit $63.02 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 3.61% or 2.39 to trade at $68.64 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.05% to 0.7699, while CAD/EUR rose 0.09% to 0.6899.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 96.580.
