Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the IT, Materials and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.08%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were TORC Oil & Gas Ltd. (TO:TOG), which rose 7.54% or 0.31 points to trade at 4.42 at the close. Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO:CPG) added 6.09% or 0.21 points to end at 3.66 and Cenovus Energy Inc (TO:CVE) was up 5.85% or 0.61 points to 11.04 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Computer Modelling Group Ltd. (TO:CMG), which lost 6.14% or 0.45 points to trade at 6.88 in late trade. Teck Resources Ltd B (TO:TECKb) declined 5.41% or 1.63 points to end at 28.52 and New Gold Inc (TO:NGD) shed 4.68% or 0.080 points to 1.630.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 626 to 454 and 128 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.94% to 15.71.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.43% or 5.65 to $1308.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.73% or 0.92 to hit $54.02 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 2.05% or 1.28 to trade at $63.70 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.14% to 0.7542, while CAD/EUR rose 0.37% to 0.6694.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.49% at 96.975.
