Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Telecoms, Materials and REITs sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.26%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Dominion Diamond Corp (TO:DDC), which rose 4.25% or 0.69 points to trade at 16.91 at the close. Cogeco Communications Inc (TO:CCA) added 4.12% or 3.31 points to end at 83.71 and MAG Silver Corp . (TO:MAG) was up 3.55% or 0.57 points to 16.61 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cineplex Inc . (TO:CGX), which lost 4.20% or 2.20 points to trade at 50.13 in late trade. Precision Drilling Corporation (TO:PD) declined 3.85% or 0.15 points to end at 3.75 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) shed 2.40% or 0.31 points to 12.58.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 576 to 489 and 137 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.55% to 13.28.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.92% or 11.14 to $1228.44 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.17% or 0.54 to hit $46.62 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.22% or 0.59 to trade at $49.01 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.56% to 0.7905, while CAD/EUR fell 0.04% to 0.6893.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.70% at 94.89.
