Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Mining, Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Silver Standard Resources Inc . (TO:SSO), which rose 10.92% or 0.89 points to trade at 9.04 at the close. IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) added 10.37% or 0.34 points to end at 3.62 and Yamana Gold Inc (TO:YRI) was up 9.64% or 0.45 points to 5.12 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (TO:VRX), which lost 7.82% or 3.43 points to trade at 40.43 in late trade. Concordia Healthcare (TO:CXR) declined 4.19% or 1.45 points to end at 33.19 and Mitel Networks Corporation (TO:MNW) shed 2.71% or 0.29 points to 10.41.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 843 to 509 and 319 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.50% to 17.82 a new 3-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 1.14% or 14.20 to $1258.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 1.66% or 0.66 to hit $40.38 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 2.10% or 0.88 to trade at $42.82 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.70% to 0.7752, while CAD/EUR rose 0.58% to 0.6796.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.25% at 93.98.
