Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were SSR Mining Inc (TSX:SSRM), which rose 7.50% or 2.02 points to trade at 28.97 at the close. NuVista Energy Ltd . (TSX:NVA) added 7.44% or 0.81 points to end at 11.69 and Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX:VET) was up 6.97% or 1.74 points to 26.70 in late trade.
Biggest losers included ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. (TSX:ATA), which lost 7.05% or 2.62 points to trade at 34.54 in late trade. Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX:LSPD) declined 4.74% or 1.38 points to end at 27.74 and Aurora Cannabis Inc (TSX:ACB) shed 4.21% or 0.17 points to 3.87.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 678 to 364 and 87 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 17.70% to 24.14 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.16% or 3.05 to $1,866.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 2.52% or 2.65 to hit $102.52 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 2.39% or 2.57 to trade at $105.01 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.34% to 0.78, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.16% to 0.74.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.28% at 103.48.
