Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.89%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Teck Resources Ltd B (TSX:TECKb), which rose 18.72% or 9.24 points to trade at 58.59 at the close. International Petroleum Corp (TSX:IPCO) added 9.17% or 1.19 points to end at 14.17 and MEG Energy Corp (TSX:MEG) was up 8.84% or 1.92 points to 23.63 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX:BEP_u), which lost 5.33% or 2.27 points to trade at 40.33 in late trade. Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) declined 4.57% or 0.50 points to end at 10.45 and Pet Valu Holdings Ltd (TSX:PET) shed 3.91% or 1.47 points to 36.17.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 543 to 475 and 92 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.66% to 13.74.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.78% or 15.40 to $2,001.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 6.42% or 4.86 to hit $80.53 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 6.40% or 5.11 to trade at $85.00 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.65% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.07% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.46% at 101.72.
