Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Clean Technology and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.83%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were SilverCrest Metals Inc (TSX:SIL), which rose 7.21% or 0.67 points to trade at 9.88 at the close. Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX:VET) added 6.01% or 0.51 points to end at 8.99 and Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TSX:TRQ) was up 5.90% or 0.99 points to 17.78 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Rogers Communications Inc (TSX:RCIb), which lost 3.52% or 2.36 points to trade at 64.60 in late trade. Transcontinental Inc (TSX:TCLa) declined 1.86% or 0.45 points to end at 23.76 and North West Company Inc (TSX:NWC) shed 1.62% or 0.59 points to 35.93.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 711 to 280 and 100 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.36% or 6.45 to $1804.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 4.58% or 3.08 to hit $70.28 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 4.15% or 2.88 to trade at $72.23 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.97% to 0.7963, while CAD/EUR rose 0.78% to 0.6745.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.26% at 92.733.
