Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Materials, Energy and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.55%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were IAMGold Corporation (TSX:IMG), which rose 24.40% or 0.61 points to trade at 3.11 at the close. OceanaGold Corporation (TSX:OGC) added 12.24% or 0.29 points to end at 2.66 and Endeavour Silver Corp. (TSX:EDR) was up 10.10% or 0.42 points to 4.58 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN), which lost 12.47% or 1.42 points to trade at 9.97 in late trade. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) declined 6.16% or 0.45 points to end at 6.85 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) shed 5.63% or 1.55 points to 25.98.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 540 to 485 and 98 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 6.91% to 15.08.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.70% or 30.65 to $1,828.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.73% or 0.55 to hit $75.93 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.13% or 0.10 to trade at $79.70 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.27% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.11% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.71% at 103.60.
