Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.34%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MEG Energy Corp (TSX:MEG), which rose 14.29% or 0.84 points to trade at 6.72 at the close. Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX:VET) added 12.54% or 0.87 points to end at 7.81 and Enerplus Corporation (TSX:ERF) was up 12.28% or 0.69 points to 6.31 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp (TSX:AQN), which lost 4.77% or 1.04 points to trade at 20.76 in late trade. Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX:BEP_u) declined 4.35% or 2.54 points to end at 55.87 and Trillium Therapeutics Inc (TSX:TRIL) shed 4.38% or 0.74 points to 16.16.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 590 to 467 and 101 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 1.66% or 29.45 to $1806.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 4.20% or 2.49 to hit $61.75 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 3.60% or 2.24 to trade at $64.38 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.14% to 0.7937, while CAD/EUR fell 0.27% to 0.6523.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.41% at 89.993.
