Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Materials, Energy and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Peyto Exploration&Development Corp (TSX:PEY), which rose 7.10% or 0.90 points to trade at 13.58 at the close. Ero Copper Corp (TSX:ERO) added 6.61% or 1.21 points to end at 19.52 and Sandstorm Gold Ltd . (TSX:SSL) was up 5.26% or 0.53 points to 10.61 in late trade.
Biggest losers included BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which lost 9.17% or 0.85 points to trade at 8.42 in late trade. Aritzia Inc (TSX:ATZ) declined 6.72% or 3.43 points to end at 47.60 and TFI International Inc (TSX:TFII) shed 5.67% or 7.55 points to 125.60.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 560 to 457 and 110 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 15.77% to 16.15.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.38% or 26.90 to $1,922.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.75% or 0.75 to hit $99.53 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.12% or 0.13 to trade at $104.58 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.12% to 0.80, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.03% to 0.72.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.17% at 98.53.
