Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Materials, Energy and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.27% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Seabridge Gold Inc . (TSX:SEA), which rose 9.23% or 1.73 points to trade at 20.48 at the close. NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG) added 7.43% or 0.28 points to end at 4.05 and Equinox Gold Corp (TSX:EQX) was up 7.08% or 0.54 points to 8.17 in late trade.
Biggest losers included ATS Corporation (TSX:ATS), which lost 6.02% or 2.92 points to trade at 45.58 in late trade. Definity Financial Corp (TSX:DFY) declined 3.62% or 1.62 points to end at 43.14 and Cargojet Inc (TSX:CJT) shed 3.29% or 3.81 points to 111.90.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 582 to 391 and 92 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.10% to 10.72.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.27% or 28.00 to $2,240.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 2.10% or 1.71 to hit $83.06 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 1.72% or 1.47 to trade at $86.88 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.16% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.54% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.21% at 104.29.
