Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) has taken a giant leap towards its long-term sustainability goals by introducing its first carbon-neutral products as part of the newly unveiled Apple Watch lineup.
With significant advancements in clean design and renewable energy usage, each carbon-neutral watch in the range has showcased a dramatic reduction in carbon emissions, exceeding 75%.
The move is closely aligned with the company's overarching Apple 2030 climate objective, which aims to make every Apple product carbon neutral, from global supply chains to device lifespans, by the end of this decade.
The Apple 2030 plan showcases a comprehensive approach to product decarbonisation, targeting the three major sources of greenhouse gas emissions across the product lifecycle: electricity generation, material sourcing and transportation.

Important milestone
Apple vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives Lisa Jackson, affirmed the company's commitment, stating: "At Apple, we have a longstanding and proven commitment to leading the fight against climate change.
"Our focus on renewable energy and low-carbon design has already driven industry-leading emissions reductions and we’re not slowing down."
“We’ve achieved an important milestone in making the world’s most popular watch carbon neutral — and we will keep innovating to meet the urgency of the moment.”
Decarbonisation strategy
Stringent criteria have been established for each carbon-neutral Apple Watch, which include:
- the watch must be manufactured and utilised with 100% clean electricity;
- comprise a minimum of 30% recycled or renewable material by weight; and
- ensure that 50% of its shipping does not involve air transportation.
Environmental initiatives
Besides the landmark launch of the carbon-neutral Apple Watch, the company has also taken several other environmental measures.
Leather, a material with a notably high carbon footprint, has been completely phased out across all Apple product lines.
Moreover, the company announced its first entirely fibre-based packaging for the new Apple Watch series, marking another milestone in material sustainability.

Grid forecast tool
To further its commitment to renewable energy, Apple has introduced a new feature known as Grid Forecast within its Home app.
This tool enables users to assess when their local power grid is using cleaner energy sources.
By making this information readily accessible, Apple aims to inspire more responsible electricity consumption among its users.
Recycled materials in band design
Complementing the carbon-neutral watches are redesigned Sport Loop bands that incorporate 82% recycled yarn.
All new Apple Watch Sport Loop bands have also been verified as carbon neutral, adding another feather to Apple’s cap in the domain of sustainable design.

Certification
Each carbon-neutral Apple Watch has been certified by SCS Global Services, a prominent leader in environmental standards and certification.
This not only substantiates Apple's claims but also sets a precedent for other tech companies to follow.
Apple's unveiling of the carbon-neutral Apple Watch lineup marks a critical milestone in its journey towards achieving its Apple 2030 climate goals.
By blending innovative design with responsible materials and renewable energy, Apple continues to set new benchmarks in corporate environmental responsibility.
