The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionise the job market, with the number of AI-related job listings up 2,000% in 2023 from a year earlier.

This staggering increase in AI job postings reflects a growing employer interest in integrating generative AI tools such as ChatGPT into business operations.

It signals a transition from awareness to adoption, aiming to bolster productivity across various sectors with occupations that blend human creativity with AI's capabilities — particularly in technology-oriented fields — in a sweet spot.

A LinkedIn Future of Work report has highlighted the susceptibility of roles in administration, finance, legal, manufacturing, retail, media and wholesale to automation.

However, LinkedIn chief economist Karin Kimbrough presents an optimistic outlook, suggesting AI will liberate employees from monotonous tasks, sharpening their focus on complex, engaging work. Kimbrough emphasises the significance of upskilling to leverage AI advancements positively.

IMF warns of disruptions

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned of potential disruptions in advanced economies, with AI advancements threatening to impact around 60% of jobs.

This is a dual-edged phenomenon that could enhance productivity for some, while diminishing labour demand and wages for others, especially if key tasks are automated.

The IMF's Kristalina Georgieva stresses the importance of political intervention to mitigate widening inequalities exacerbated by AI.

AI's role in recruitment processes also raises concerns regarding bias and accuracy. Notable cases involving Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) highlight the challenges of AI-based hiring tools and underscore the importance of human oversight in the recruitment process.

Despite these issues, Kimbrough remains hopeful about AI's potential to diversify hiring and create unforeseen job opportunities, urging a balanced view of technological transition's costs and benefits.

"It's really an opportunity for people to think about how to upskill themselves as opposed to fearing they're going to be replaced by a robot," Kimbrough said.
